Ragging is a crime
Ancient Indian learning Institutions based the teaching and learning process on principles of mutual respect and pacifism. Ragging on the other hand, transformed the traditional practice of mutual interaction of freshers with their seniors into a potent instrument of physical and mental assault that tends to leave an inexpungeable impression on the victim’s mind.

As a result, in 1997, the state of Tamil Nadu first passed laws related to ragging which led the trail for several others to follow. A major upraise to Anti-Ragging efforts came in the form of a landmark judgement of Supreme Court of India in May 2001 in response to a Public Intersest Litigation filled by the Vishwa Jagriti Mission. The Raghavan Committee Report led by ex-CBI Director, Dr. R.K. Raghavan submitted its report to the Court in May 2007 including a proposal to include ragging as a special section under the Indian Penal Code.
